DIY Baby Girl Onesies

It's been awhile since I've posted a project I've done besides the fair... let me rephrase...it's actually been awhile since I've even done a project that wasn't for the fair! So this was a fun and easy project that wasn't home decor.

Some good friend of ours were getting ready to have a baby girl. I just love all the cute ideas and things there are out there for baby girls and with me having 2 girls of my own I decided to gift two of my favorite things I liked having for my girls.

1. Some headbands and accessories from Ambrey's Accessories. As I mentioned before I love these headbands with interchangeable snap accessories. Mia wore one just about everyday of first year of her life and they held up perfectly to use now for Livy.

2. Cute onesies. Onesies are my absolute favorite and go to for babies. I even use them for under baby dresses or shirts because I hate constantly having their dress/shirt up to their armpits and their tummies being bare. It's a little weird and OCD I know. Anyway I thought I'd get a little creative and "embellish" some onesies on my own.

I just used scrap fabric, lace and trim I already had to put these together along with some iron-on applique paper and the final result was just so adorable! I want to remake all of these for Livy now!

I'm in love with Peter-pan collared shirts right now so of course I had to try my hand and making one in "baby form".

Staying in Touch with my Crafty Side

I don't normally have this many "crafty" posts this close together since its not something I do every night but since I have been trying to get a lot of crafts done before Livy comes I practically have been! And although my Pinterest Challenge is over I still get most all my ideas and inspiration for projects off there, which is where these next two projects came from.

First up are Quiet time boxes for Mia. Since she stopped taking naps a couple of months ago I resorted to quiet times in her room in the afternoons for about 2 hours on average for her bust mostly my own sanity. I also think quiet time is a great way to teach kids how to play quietly and entertain themselves for awhile. Anyway, I noticed lately Mia getting bored with the toys in her room and she would be done playing in less then an hour before she would be banging on the door ready to come out. So when I saw THIS idea on pinterest it was a must try! What she did was have a box for each day of the week and filled them with different toys for her kids to play with during quiet time, giving them something new to play with each day and keep them entertained.

So here are the things I started off with to make my "Quiet Time" boxes.

- 5 plastic containers (I found mine at Walmart for about $3 each)

- Labels with each day of the week (Monday through Friday)

- Age-appropriate things to fill containers with. (I started out with trying to get at least two different things per box and plan on adding to them as time goes.) You also can use thing that you already have so you don't have to buy everything.

For each box I tried to add something on the educational/developmental side like a book about colors or these cheap, cute puzzles I found at Walmart with ABC's and numbers. Then I tried to add something that would spark creative play like some more magnetic paper dolls or a princess dress up set.

I also tried to spruce up things I already had. For example, I grabbed a picture online of a kid's road map and printed that out and laminated it for Mia to drive this little fisher price car on.

Another thing I did was make some blankets and pillows out of some fabric scraps I had for these cute dolls that Mia was given for her birthday. She loves tucking things in "nigh-nigh".

These boxes have been a huge success and have made quiet time for Mia a lot more fun and entertaining. It gives her something to look forward to each day and makes it less painful for me so I  can enjoy some "me" time in the afternoon as well.

My second project were these adorable cardigan onesies I made following THIS tutorial. I made these for a friend who is due just a couple days after me and is having a boy. I never get to make things for baby boys so I couldn't resist! They turned out SO cute and were SO easy to make!

Here's what I used:

-Cute onesies to make the cardigan. I got these two onesies from Old Navy

- Double wide bias tape.

-Buttons to sew on the cardigan

- plain white onesie to go underneath

-coordinating scrap fabric to make the bow tie and tie. If you do the tie you'll also need double-sided iron on adhesive.

Now my list is pretty much complete on the crafts I wanted to get done. Now I just need my nesting phase to kick in and clean my house before this baby comes! On a side note I scheduled to be induced on my due date which is Monday, but I'm hoping Livy will decide to come before then!

Pinterest Challenge Week 1

First off, I need to make a confession...this week's project was a complete failure; as many of my sewing projects seem to be when it comes to sewing something for myself!

If you recall for my Pinterest Challenge line-up HERE, this week was the color-blocked square top.

After going to the fabric store and finding some fabric that I thought would be perfect, I started my sewing project promptly after putting Mia to bed with excitement. Long story short, after 3 hours of measuring, cutting and sewing I was left with on ill fitting square top with a color-block that looked more like a belly band and in the end I  also decided that the fabric was just not me. Needless to say I was a little frustrated and disappointed.

I wasn't ready  to give up completely on this challenge though. At first I thought about getting more fabric and starting over, but I  didn't want to take the risk of having another failed shirt so I decided to try another top that my sister suggested that can actually work while being pregnant.

I knew this project would be a lot easier since I wouldn't be starting a shirt from scratch and since it's one of those projects you can use a shirt you already like as a guideline for the one you're re-sizing to fit better. Another bonus...it's FREE! So I was off to Eric's side of the closet to look for a shirt he didn't wear. Here is what I found:

I was able to refashion this over-sized shirt into a fashionable fitting one in less than an hour with time to clean the house and relax all before going to bed! Definitely my kind of project! Not to mention I really liked the outcome; so much in fact I did it to another old t-shirt of Eric's!

Now for one more quick confession before I showcase the results...I am NO fashion model (this is already obvious) and have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to being in front of the camera resulting in my awkward posing lol (hence why I'm always the one taking the pictures)!

The Square Top

May I just start off by acknowledging that this post is my 100th post on the blog and I'm just a few more views away from having 10,000 page views! So a big thanks to people who actually take interest enough to at least look at my pictures and want to keep up on our family! I've come to really enjoy blogging and documenting my thoughts, family events, crafts and pictures.

This week I got in the sewing mood and one morning decided to make Mia a shirt. I've been wanting to make this square shirt which I originally found on pinterest from a tutorial from Cotton and Curls blog. It looked super easy, but I wanted to try it out in a little smaller scale before I did mine.

Just as expected it was super easy and turned out really cute and minus a cranky kid this project would take less then an hour to make! My suggestion...make this!

Finally I got some smiles out of this girl on camera! I love capturing her fun personality!

Project Update

The other week I finally decided to have a sewing day. Of course as fate would have it, it was probably one of the worst days to do it. Mia was sick the whole week and not a very happy baby. I really don't appreciate what a good baby Mia is until she is not herself! Anyway, I somehow managed to at least sew a skirt for Mia that I kind of made up as I went along and it ended up turning out really cute.

This next project, I started before Christmas when I was teaching Sara how to crochet. We both made these cute ear warmers and I finished it up this week by crocheting a flower for it. These are quite popular here in Utah and I've really wanted one, but most of them are just so wide that I didn't like them so I loved that I was able to make this ear warmer fit my wants!

And now for my favorite project underway...Sara's baby shower (which I have already mentioned). We were working on some of the things for the shower over the weekend and I just love how everything is coming together that I wanted to give you all a sneak peek!

We made four of these flower arrangements for a total of $6! I got some old mason jars from my Grandma and we tinted them an aqua blue. Then we used the flowers from Sara's wedding bouquet and bought the rest at Walmart. Granted Walmart doesn't have the best looking fake flowers, but with fake flowers being so expensive we wanted to take a cheaper route and it still turned out great!
